One, the phenomenal growth in Indo-US Business in the last 15 years or so, from a level of USD 3.6 bn ( 1991) to over USD 60 bn now. (Bilateral trade in merchandise goods and
services). Two, Indo-US Business has not grown adequately despite the best of the climate and opportunities and an improving relations between the two countries.

The growing synergy between the two countries in the technology sectors and mutually shared respect for democracy, rule of law and well established business practices make the two countries natural business partners. Indo-US relations that was aid-based in the early 1960s and 70s is now, a trade-based relationship.

The fall of the USSR in 1990 and India’ new economic reform programme in 1991 were two major landmarks that contributed to a new found momentum in the two countries coming together.

Though the Nuclear test conducted by India in 1998 made the US to “go back” a little, it was only temporary. The visit of the US President Clinton to India in 2000, the high priority accorded to relations with India by the subsequent Bush administration, the historic Indo-US Nuclear deal have all contributed to improving the Indo-US Economic Relations.

India Ð US Trade

At present, the country’s total engagement with the US is over $60 billion, out of which about $40 billion are accounted for by the merchandise trade. Last fiscal, the services exports to the US touched $22 billion

U.S. is one of the largest foreign direct investors in India. Cumulative FDI inflows from USA is over USD 9 billion. FDI inflows from USA constitute about 8 percent of actual FDI inflows into India in rupee terms.

• India’s Exports to USA : $39.89 billion, a 65 percent increase from the previous year

• U.S. Exports to India : $22.44 billion, a 85 percent increase from the previous year

i) Major items of export from India to US Select major items with their percentage shares, are given:

a) Textiles (23%)
b) Precious stones & metals (21.5%)
c) Iron & Steel products (5.5%)
d) Organic Chemicals (6.1%)
e) Machinery (5.2%)
f) Electrical Machinery (5.3%)
g) Pharmaceutical products (7.8%)

ii) Major items of export from US to India Select major items with their percentage shares, are given below

a) Machinery (13.8%)
b) Aviation & aircraft (14.3%)
c) Precious stones & metals (14.3%)
d) Electrical Machinery (7.7%)
e) Fertilizers (7.6%)
f) Mineral fuel, Oil, etc. (5.7%)
g) Optical instruments & equipment (5.5%)

The sectors attracting FDI from USA are: Fuels (Power & Oil Ref.), (Telecommunications (radio paging, cellular mobile & basic telephone
services, Electrical Equipment (including Computer Software & Electronics) Food Processing Industries (Food products & marine products), and Service Sector (Fin. & Non-Fin. Services). In Portfolio Investment also, USA is the leading investor.

The official view of the US about Indian market offers an interesting insight – “The Indian market with its one billion plus population, presents lucrative and diverse opportunities for U.S. exporters with the right products, services, and commitment. India’s requirements for equipments and services for major sectors such as energy, environmental, healthcare, high-tech, infrastructure, transportation, and defense will exceed tens of billions of dollars in the mid-term as the Indian economy further globalizes and expands. India’s GDP, growing at 6.7% makes it one of the fastest growing economies in the world and the second fastest in Asia. India has potential for a sustained growth of 8 – 10% for the next couple of years. Now is the time for U.S. companies to enter the rising Indian market.”

Indian Investments in the US

Indian investments in the US have been growing significantly since 2002, by around 75 per cent per year. Investments in 2006 were estimated at around US$ 2 billion and rose sharply in 2007 to touch US$ 13 billion. In 2007-08 alone, an estimated US$ 10.25 billion was invested by Indian companies in the US.

Moreover, India’s FDI to the US was US$ 4.5 billion in 2008 and US$ 2.8 billion in the previous year. According to a study, during the last two years, Indian companies acquired 143 US firms across various sectors. While 94 deals were concluded in 2007-08, in the following year when the economy was on the downturn, Indians bought as many as 50 US entities that were on the verge of closure, saving thousands of jobs.

Another study called the ‘Contribution of the Indian industry to the US economy’ says that during the period 2004-07, Indian industry had contributed US$ 105 billion to the US economy and created 300,000 jobs.

Prospect for further India-US Economic cooperation

There are several areas where economic cooperation between India and the US can progress further. These include infrastructure, IT, Telecom sector, energy and other knowledge industries such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

India’s telecom sector has been growing at a rate of about 20 percent per annum for the past few years. There also exist huge untapped rural potential. India is the second largest wireless market in the world.

The energy sector offers for exploitation a vast untapped potential to investors in hydro electricity, oil & natural gas, solar energy and coal.

A white paper titled, ‘India’s Role in the Globalization of the IT Industry’ by Evalueserve, a knowledge process outsourcing company, states that India is likely to emerge as the second largest IT industry after the US in terms of revenue and employment. As the US and India’s IT industries are closely and inextricably linked with each other, the two countries will import and export more IT services and products for the coming seven to eight years.

Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton remarked , “The first stage of Indo-U.S. relations was ushered in when President Bill Clinton opened a new chapter of engagement with India. Then President George [W.] Bush took it to the second level with the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear agreement. The Obama administration is determined to take it to the third stage, which would allow the countries to move beyond concerns about the status of India’s nuclear program to a framework of economic and technical cooperation.”

The nuclear deal offers great opportunites. . Ron Somers, the president of the U.S.-India Business Council, says,“the U.S.-India nuclear deal will present a major opportunity for U.S. and Indian companies….the deal would create up to 27,000 “high-quality” jobs per year over the next decade in the U.S. nuclear industry. ”

Conclusion

India sends more students to the U.S. colleges than any other country in the world. In 2008, over 94,563 Indian students enrolled in the U.S. An enormous amount of money is put into the US This can be one single important reason why Indo-US Business needs to be at a much higher level.

According to a study, bilateral trade between India and the US could increase eight fold to reach US$ 320 billion in 2018. tTo recall the words of Condoleza Rice the former US Secretary of State, “India and US are poised for a partnership that will be crucial in shaping the international order in the 21st century”. A robust and dynamic partnership that benefits both the countries that are separated by thousands of miles is a great example for other countries
of the world. India and the US are natural allies and there are boundless opportunities in this relationship for both the countries. Both the countries stand to gain leaps and bounds through this great, positive transformation.

Director, International Trade,Global Commerce Georgia Department of Economic Development

Corporate leaders such as The Coca Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, Home Depot, UPS, AFLAC, Newell Rubbermaid, NCR, and GulfStream as well as medium and small companies and micro-enterprises, have discovered that Georgia is the ideal location for investment, tourism and a great source of quality products and services.

Georgia is a state of opportunity. Companies in our established industries—agriculture, floor-coverings, pulp, paper and forest products, chemicals, and transportation equipment—as well as our high growth strategic industry sectors—aerospace, agribusiness, automotive, energy, logistics and clean tech industries—have discovered that Georgia has the assets to help them thrive.

This diversified industry base has helped Georgia become the ninth largest U.S. state, with a population close to 10 million people, and historically one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. Since more than half of Georgia’s growth is through migration, Georgia is clearly a destination of choice. We are home to 4,900 international facilities representing 61 countries as well as 125 consulates, honorary consulates, trade commissions and bi-national chambers of commerce.

What helps these companies succeed in Georgia? Logistics! Georgia’s transportation network is unparalleled. With its central location in the Southeast, companies can reach 80 percent of the U.S. market in a two hour flight or two-day truck haul. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is consistently the world’s busiest, and its connectivity is complemented by a world-class rail and highway system and the nation’s busiest, fastest-growing ports. Transportation ties between Atlanta and India includes non-stop air service offered by Delta Air Lines and nine ocean carriers that sail between India and Georgia ports.

In this increasingly global economy, Georgia has the right connections for international trade and international business. We have also long fostered a business friendly environment. Lower tax rates, a low cost of doing business and a competitive array of business incentives mean you can do more with less in Georgia. Georgia companies offer a broad selection of products and services and are eager for international business opportunities. Visiting some of our many trade shows offers a great opportunity to view Georgia products and services.

These advantages are enhancing Georgia’s ties with India. On the trade front, through August 2010, India ranked as Georgia’s 15th largest export market in dollar value of exports, a 26% increase over this same period the year before. Georgia’s primary exports to India include machinery, chemicals and paper/paperboard. When ranked among all U.S. states exporting to India, Georgia ranked 11th in dollar value of exports.

Georgia receives many exports from India as well. In 2009, India ranked as Georgia’s 13th largest importer nation in dollar value of imports, a decline of 11.5% over 2008. Goods imported from India include electronic machinery, textiles and carpet. Among the 50 U.S. states, Georgia ranked as the 7th largest importing state in dollar value of imports from India in 2009.

Several Georgia firms have operations in India including The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, Ebix, Inc., Internet Security Systems, JBoss, Inc., Recall Corporation, and S1 Corporation. Over a dozen firms from India are located in Georgia, one of which is Wipro Technologies.

We invite you to discover what so many companies already know. Georgia is the ideal environment for businesses looking to relocate or expand and is a well-known source of quality products and services. But don’t just take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about our state:

No. 1 workforce training program in the U.S. (Expansion Management, 2008)

2nd in the U.S. for transportation & infrastructure (CNBC 8/09)

3rd in the U.S. for best workforce (CNBC 8/09)

6th in infrastructure & infrasystems (US Chamber 6/10)

9th for positive economic outlook (American Legislative Exchange Council 6/10)

6th Best State for Business (Forbes 5/10)

8th Pro-Business State (6 years running!) (Pollina Corporate Real Estate ’09)

Georgia’s International Trade Team, winner of Presidential E-Star Award for excellence in exporting

Winner of the Silver Shovel Award for innovation in economic development (Area Development 6/10)

Our Georgia economic development office will be pleased to help you discover why Georgia is in a class of its own! Visit us on the web at georgia.org or give us a call at 404-962-4000.

1 ) Can you please indicate how welcome Buckhead is to investments from foreign countries ?

Buckhead prides itself as the best market in Atlanta to live, work and play – and is the home to The Atlanta International School. The Buckhead community openly welcomes foreign investment – whether its real estate investing, intellectual capital, and/or community involvement.

2) What are the opportunities for Indian investors / businesses in Atlanta today ?

There is a strong economic development network in Atlanta, starting with the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors, and the Georgia Power Site Services Resource Center, to name a few. Atlanta and the State of Georgia have tax incentives, labor credits, and other concessions which are pro-business. As for real estate investing in Atlanta – now is absolutely the best time to buy “bricks and mortar”, and Atlanta will always do well over time.

3) What is so special about Buckhead when compared to other US cities ?

Buckhead offers the most densely populated submarket of Atlanta , with the highest income demographics, and probably the most disposable income of all of Atlanta ’s submarkets. It has the largest concentration of fashion and financial services in the area – making it very competitive with major Metropolitan cities. Although Buckhead is technically not its own “City”, everyone knows where it is when it is mentioned.

4) What is the Interest of your Company in India ?

We would be interested in knowing what companies in India are seeking from US partners, suppliers, buyers.

5) About Indian investments in Atlanta / Buckhead …

Massell Commercial Real Estate works with companies who seek to open offices, warehouses, or other commercial ventures in the United States . The firm also assists private investors to acquire income-producing real estate for wealth creation. We are most interested in establishing relationships abroad to channel inbound developments.

6) Any other info that you would like to share…

We constantly scout the market for a variety of real estate opportunities, and it helps us help you when we know your criteria better. Just let us know what you’d like to consider, thanks!

Sam Massell – President,
Buckhead Coalition, Atlanta, Georgia

Sam Massell, a life-long resident of Atlanta, has had successful careers in real estate brokerage, elected office, the field of tourism, and association management.

Among other achievements, his administration as Mayor is credited with establishing MARTA (Atlanta’s mass transit program), with developing the city’s first enclosed arena (the Omni Coliseum), and with providing the “Five Points” Central City Woodruff Park, all with no call on ad valorem taxes. He also pioneered minority opportunities in city government, appointing the first female to Atlanta’s City Council and the first Blacks as City Department heads.

Mayor Massell now manages a nonprofit civic organization as founding President of the Buckhead Coalition. This is a prestigious association of Chief Executive Officers of major businesses in this area on the north side of Atlanta who have pooled their strengths to nurture the quality of life and guide the orderly growth of Buckhead.

In a brief interview with www.indousbiz.com, Mayor Sam Massell shares his thoughts on a wide range of topics.

What does the Buckhead coalition stand for in the US business perspective ?

The Coalition’s membership of chief executive officers of major firms in this affluent quadrant of Atlanta exudes strength exercising its mission of nurturing the quality of life and coordinating an orderly growth of its community

To what extent does a City contribute in attracting talent and businesses ?

The image of a city and its pro-business philosophy serves as the major magnet in attracting growth.

You have been a pioneer in ushering in a change in the transportation systems in Atlanta. How do you think the transportation will change in the next two-three decades ?

Mobility is that part of the formula that brings all interests together, and technology will continue to improve this impact so that it becomes faster, safer, more comfortable and more affordable.

What is the special feature of Atlanta when compared to the other US cities in attracting foreign Companies?

Having the world’s largest airport makes geographical separation smaller and smaller, so that none are “foreign” to each other, but all are international.

As a veteran in the Association field, what is the changing / new role of Industry Associations in the US and worldover ?

Associations are undertaking greater involvement in governmental roles, ever increasing the mutual benefits of public/private partnerships.

What is the scope of Foreign (Indian) businesses in Atlanta ?

The respect Atlanta has for India evolves into a comfort level that fosters international understanding and international trade.

What challenges do you foresee for the US to retain its global business leadership ?

Differences between nations are dissolving to the benefit of mutual growth which, itself, somewhat decreases the significance of world dominance by any one entity.

He has been traveling to India for more than a decade advising Indian Companies on how to invest and do business in the US.

“In my experience of traveling to India, particularly Chennai in South India, Indian companies are very keen and eager to invest and do business in the US. I am sure, now the environment is quite apt for smart Indian companies to invest and do business in the US. It requires sustained information flow in either directions ( India and USA ) and this can trigger a plethora of investment activity”.

Atlanta based food chain, Church’s, plans to open 300 stores in India over the next decade. The first store opened in 2008.

In 2008, Wipro Technologies, one of the largest product engineering and support service providers in the world located their U.S. office in Atlanta. In February of this year, Wipro received the 2010 Global Impact Award from the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

General Electric will supply Cairn, India with 32 Jenbacher gas engines that will provide electricity for India’s heated crude oil pipeline. This is General Electric’s largest order from India.

Delta Air Lines provides flights from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport to Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.

There are nine ocean carriers, including NSCSA, Hanjin, Yang Ming, UASC and K-line, that sail from India to/from Savannah ports.

The increase in exports to India contributed to the Port of Savannah’s unprecedented growth in the 2008 fiscal year; India received 18,335 containers from Georgia, a 251% increase from the previous fiscal year.

Georgia Tech will open a campus in Hyderabad soon. They plan to offer degrees recognized by the United States and identical to certain degrees offered by Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta (GIACC), Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the Asian Indian Chamber of Commerce work to develop and promote trade and between India and the United States, specifically Georgia. Says
Mr. Michael Kraus, “ India and Georgia have many things in Common and there can be a great deal of of cooperation for mutual benefit that can happen between India and the US, with Georgia playing a key role in it”.

Chillies Export House is a traditional name in India in the business of extracting oleorisins from dried chillies. Vidyasagar, the Global Marketing head of the company shares his thoughts on his company and the naturual extracts business. Excerpts :

1. Special Features of Capsaicin Powder

Pure capsaicin is a white crystalline powder. It is composed of two unsaturated amd three saturated compounds called capsaicinoids. Capsaicinoids is the pungent principles of Red chillies. It has lot of medicinal properties. It helps relieve pain. It shows good cure to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chromic rhinitis. It reduces platelet thickness making it less sticky. It helps reduce cholesterol and blood pressure reducing risk of heart attacks.

It helps boost metabolism while suppressing appetite. So it may have stress relieving characteristics and helps to loose weight.Sufficiently diluted Aerosol/ pellets can be used by civilians in self defence, by military against terrorists and law enforcement agencies for mob control. It only causes temporary irritation and leaves no permanent damage. Capsaicinoids has anticorrosive properties. It helps repulse white ant attacks in wood. In ship it inhibits marine lives sticking to the bottom / anchors.

2. In which way you are different from other manufacturers ?

Oleoresin capsicum is a natural solvent extract of red chillies which is processed to obtain pure capsaicin which contains 95% capsaicinoids. We use natural synthesis process by removing lipids and carotenoids from the oleoresin and separate capsaicinoid crystals without using organic solvent or activated charcoal treatment. It ensures more efficiency and pure product.

3. Your Future Plans for the Capsaicin Powder :

Pure capsaicin contains the following major capsaicinoids are Capsaicin, Dihydro capsaicin, Nor Dihydro capsaicin, Homo capsaicin. Homo dihydro capsaicin of the five capsaicinoids the first three compounds contain more than 95% of the pungency. Efforts are on to isolate capsaicin and Dihydro capsaicin which can be used as standards and special applications. We are also taking efforts to isolate hungency free capsaicinoids like captiate which can be extracted from sweet patrika (capsicum fraticins) Capsaicin Gel can be manufactured with required concentration.

4. What are the key benefits that your Company / Product provide to the US market ?

Our company has been exporting Chillies, Chilli powder Paprika Oleoresin, Capsicum Oleoresin and now pure Capsaicin to USA for more than 40 years ..
5. What do you think as a key factor for your success in Chillies business?
